Children’s Orthodontics at Newmarket Family Dental Newmarket
At Newmarket Family Dental, orthodontics is about more than just straight teeth and a beautiful smile. Crooked teeth are only the tip of the iceberg and reflect misaligned, underdeveloped jaws. There is a shift toward an early intervention approach to orthodontics in recent years. Orthodontic practitioners are seeing the benefits of treating most children before all their adult teeth are through. Not only is it easier to change the growing jaws of children, but it may avoid costly surgery or the needless extraction of many teeth later on to reach the same result.

Early Diagnosis is Key
Did you know that future problems with jaw growth and mispositioned teeth can be predicted long before their permanent teeth come through, in children as young as four years old? Early diagnosis and intervention is essential in order to obtain the most ideal result and help them grow to their full potential. Planning your child’s treatment from a young age can help take advantage of their natural growth, in order to create and maintain space for the adult teeth to grow in straight. |
We can also help correct many undesirable habits, such as thumb sucking, and prevent the disastrous consequences they may have on the jaws. Our philosophy is finding the causes early and do our best to prevent them from permanently affecting your child’s teeth and jaws. At Newmarket Family Dental, we normally assess our patients at around 7 years of age. Our dentists are trained to look out for the common signs and symptoms.
These commonly include: bed wetting, poor quality of sleep, snoring and/or heavy breathing at night, daytime sleepiness and irritability, open mouth breathing, and poor posture/slouching. Take note of any crowding and rotations of teeth, as well as any differences in the number of teeth between the left and right sides of the mouth. Also, ask your child to bite together on their back teeth and check if the top teeth fit over the bottom teeth. If you suspect that your child may have any of these signs and symptoms, we are happy to have complimentary chat! If your child is eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Scheme or is covered under your private health insurance, check out our Gap free offer and get their teeth checked and cleaned at the same time Changes in our health and lifestyles can affect the development of our jaws and teeth, and the opposite is also true, especially when it comes to the position and alignment of our teeth. We treat crooked teeth as a sign that there may be other health problems or habits which also need to be addressed. Here is a classic example. If your child has to constantly breathe through their mouth because of a chronically blocked nose due to allergies, then their tongue is unable to place pressure on the bones of the palate to stimulate its growth. This often leads to a narrow, underdeveloped palate and upper jaw that is unable to fit all the upper teeth, leading to them crowding together. Mouth breathing can also lead to the development of frequent throat infections, increased risk needing fillings and has been shown to be associated with bedwetting. Many people think that braces only work on kids, however, this is definitely wrong! There is no age restriction for having teeth straightened. Adult orthodontics is now widely accepted and a large number of people of all ages are seeking treatment. As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, we can help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted. We understand that you may not want to be seen with metal wires and brackets on your teeth. It may be an unacceptable look for your job or you may simply feel uncomfortable having metal in your mouth. Luckily, orthodontics and braces have evolved over the past few decades, and now we can straighten your teeth with invisible (barely visible) braces. Thanks to our partners at Invisalign ©, we can now use advanced CAD/CAM technology to have clear aligners made which will straighten teeth without braces! These clear aligners are hardly visible and unlike braces, require hardly any effort at all to maintain! And added bonus with Invisalign© and clear aligners is that you can eat all of your favourite foods without worrying about anything breaking. If the fear of being seen with metal braces and wires on your teeth is stopping you, then give us a call for a complimentary chat with our friendly team! The process is super quick and easy. We use a state-of-the-art intraoral scanner to take a digital impression (or mould) of your teeth and bite. There is no gooey impression material involved! We can then send you a simulation of how your teeth will move to their new perfectly straight positions. This will allow you to give us your input on how you want your smile to look like. Once everyone is happy, we get the aligners made and one of our friendly team will show you how to use them. We will then see you every 6 weeks until the treatment is completed! We offer a range of flexible interest-free payment options for adult braces and Invisalign© in order to help you fit it into your budget. If you have orthodontic cover included in your private health insurance, we can help you figure out how much you will get back and claim on the spot. Don’t forget that we offer Gap-free check-up and cleans for all health funds too! |
