Root Canal Treatment is commonly performed to save teeth that have damaged nerves and blood vessels. It is often required to treat toothaches caused by large holes/cavities, cracks and trauma to the teeth. There is a false perception by many people that the root canal procedure is painful and doesn’t work. This is completely false and debunked by countless scientific articles. In fact, root canal therapy is one of the most peaceful and pain-free procedures that we do. This is because modern local anaesthetics numb the teeth so well that the treatment is not felt at all.
If you are experiencing severe aching/throbbing pain from a tooth or side of the face, it is possible that you may have a large hidden hole or crack in a tooth which has reached the nerves and blood vessels in the middle of the tooth, called the pulp. When the pulp gets infected, it becomes swollen just like if you got a cut on any other part of your body. The swelling and infection causes’ severe pain as the pulp is full of nerve fibres. If the swelling and pressure in the tooth gets too much for the pulp to handle, it can die leaving a space in the middle of the tooth for bacteria to grow, eventually leading to an abscess. An abscess may flare up over time and potentially lead to facial swelling and other serious conditions. That is why it is important to get any pain in your teeth checked by a dentist to ensure there aren’t any hidden future problems. |
